Peniscola castle known as “The city of the sea” was built by the Knights Templar in 1294; it was the seat of Pope Benedict XIII (Pope Luna) and was used in the making of the epic 1961 film ‘El Cid’ staring Charlton Heston & Sofia Loren.
Peniscola is located on the coast approximately 30 minutes north of Castellon on the Spanish mainland, directly opposite the island of Mallorca.
